GTA 6 graphics: 4K, HDR, ray tracing and what the engine can do

GTA VI runs on an evolved RAGE engine. 4K/60fps on PS5 Pro, ray-traced reflections, volumetric weather — technical breakdown.

RAGE Engine, Evolved

GTA VI runs on Rockstar's proprietary RAGE engine — the same base as RDR2 and GTA V, but massively reworked over 10 years of internal development.

Target Performance (PS5 / Xbox Series X)

Based on official trailers and developer interviews:

  • Quality mode: 4K/30fps with ray tracing
  • Performance mode: 1440p/60fps, reduced ray tracing
  • PS5 Pro: Potentially 4K/60fps with enhanced ray tracing

Graphics Features Shown in Trailers

Ray Tracing

Reflections on wet Vice City streets, car hoods, glass surfaces. Night scenes show realistic neon reflections across puddles.

Volumetric Weather

Thunderstorms with visible rain density variation. Everglades fog sits low over water. Lighting changes in real time as storm clouds move.

Crowd Density

Vice City beach scenes show hundreds of simultaneous NPCs with individual animations and clothing. Far beyond GTA V.

HDR and Color Grading

The Florida color palette — high contrast, saturated sunsets, deep shadows at night — benefits enormously from HDR display support.

PC Version (Future)

Consoles will be the ceiling at launch. The PC version (expected 2027-2028) will unlock higher settings, uncapped frame rates, and the inevitable 8K mods from the community.
